Frequently asked questions.
What should I know when purchasing a naturally dyed or eco-printed item?
Over time as naturally dyed and eco-printed items are used, washed, exposed to sunlight and experience friction, their colours will shift; this is the evolving, dimensional beauty and ephemeral quality of natural dyes.
Take care to not leave or store naturally dyed or eco-printed items, consistently, in direct sunlight.
Note: natural dyes, particularly indigo, can rub off onto lighter fabrics.
What should I know when purchasing a hand stitched item?
Hand stitched items should not be twisted during the hand washing and drying process. That movement will compromise the integrity of the thread, potentially breaking it or pulling it out of the fabric where it has been knotted and secured.
Washing and drying a hand stitched item in a washing machine and dryer may cause threads to be pulled from the fabric where it has been knotted and secured.
How do I care for my quilt?
Enjoy it often. Wash it sometimes. Spot cleaning is better.
To preserve the hand stitching and the naturally dyed fabrics, I recommend hand washing.
Delicately spot clean obvious stains using only cold water and a pH neutral or enzyme free detergent. Never use stain remover or bleach.
If the whole quilt needs attention, let it soak in cold water with a pH neutral or enzyme free detergent for as long as you feel is necessary, then gently agitate until you feel it is clean. Repeat this process to rinse the quilt. A bathtub provides the most space to hand wash a quilt.
Do not wring out your quilt; rather, gently squeeze the water out of it, being careful not to twist it. Roll up the quilt in towels or sheets to soak up the excess water, and repeat as necessary. Lay it flat to dry in indirect sunlight.
If storing the quilt, put it in a cotton pillowcase and place it in a dark, dry spot. Air it out occasionally.
Can I use the washer and dryer to wash and dry my quilt?
I will never recommend using a washing machine or dryer to care for your quilt, but I am compelled to give some guidance; I want you to enjoy your quilt for years to come.
Always wash in cold water with a pH neutral detergent. Use a washing machine that has no agitator and the option to pick a delicate cycle with low or no spin. Include 3-4 Shout Colour Catcher sheets. Squeeze, do not wring, any excess water out of the quilt before you dry it. At this point the quilt can be laid flat to dry in indirect sunlight.
The wool batting will shrink a little bit if it is put in the dryer as I do not wash or dry the batting prior to using it for your quilt.
If you are putting it in the dryer, put the settings on low heat, dry for 30 minutes and include wool dryer balls. After the dryer, lay the quilt flat in indirect sunlight to finish drying.
How do I care for my eco-printed, naturally dyed and/or hand stitched items that aren’t quilts?
To reiterate: Over time as naturally dyed and eco-printed items are used, washed, exposed to sunlight and experience friction, their colours will shift; this is the evolving, dimensional beauty and ephemeral quality of natural dyes. and eco-prints.
Please take care to follow these suggested Care Instructions.
Always use cold water and a pH neutral or an enzyme free detergent. Never use stain remover or bleach.
If a delicate spot clean won’t do, then soak the item for as long as you feel is necessary, agitate by hand and do not scrub it. After rinsing the detergent out of the item, squeeze the water out; being careful to not ring or twist it. And finally, lay it flat to dry in indirect sunlight.
Eco-printed socks and scarves are fine to be pressed with an iron on a low heat setting e.g. silk setting. In fact, I suggest this, as It will help socks maintain their shape.
Naturally dyed fabrics can also be pressed or ironed on a low heat setting. e.g. silk setting. The saturation of some natural dyes will decrease on a high heat setting e.g. linen.
How do I care for my leather straps on my tote bag?
There is no care required…just enjoy the darkening and natural aging of the leather.
